Germantown is a census designated place located in Montgomery County, Maryland in the United States. Germantown had a population of 86,395 as of the 2010 United States Census report. Which makes Germantown the third most populated place in Maryland, after Baltimore, and Columbia, Maryland. If Germantown was going to incorporate as a city, it would make it the second largest city in the state of Maryland. Germantown is located about 25 miles outside of Washington, D.C.,the capital of the U.S.. Germantown is an important part of the Washington, D.C. Metro Area.

The Germantown area was originally planned to be divided into a downtown and six town villages, namely Lake Village,Gunners, Churchill Village, Kingsview Village, Middlebrook Village, Clopper’s Mill Village, and Neelsville Village. The Churchill Town part of Germantown, which is located at the corner of Maryland Route 118 and Middlebrook Road most closely resembles the center of old Germantown, because of the location of the County Government Center, library, Black Rock Arts Center, multiplex cinema, and the shopping that features an array of eateries. There are three exits to Interstate 270 that are less than one mile away, and the Maryland Regional Commuter train is within walking distance. The Germantown Transit Center that provides Ride On shuttle service to the Shady Grove red line is also in walking distance.

In Germantown the assigned ZIP codes are 20874 and 20876 for deliveries and 20875 for post office boxes. It is the most populated Germantown in Maryland and is the only Germantown that is recognized by the United States Postal Service (USPS), even though there is a Germantown in Anne Arundel County, one in Baltimore County, and a Germantown in Worcester County.

In the 1830s and 40s, the Germantown business area was focused at the intersection of Liberty Mill Road and Clopper Road. Many of the business owners there were German. The fact was that most of the local landowners and farmers in the area were English, travelers and people that visited Germantown always remembered the German shop-owners so they called the area Germantown, and the name stuck.

George Atzerodt, a co-conspirator in President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, was captured in Germantown on April 20, 1865. John Wilkes Booth assigned Atzerodt to assassinate Vice President Andrew Johnson, but he could not bring himself to do it so he fled Washington, D.C., the night of the Lincoln assassination. Atzerodt was captured at his cousin farm in Germantown. Atzerodt, Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, and David Herold were hanged on July 7, 1865 in Washington, D.C.
