Arlington County is a county located in the state of Virginia. The land that is now Arlington was originally donated by the commonwealth of Virginia to the U.S. government to be part of the new federal capital district (Washington, D.C.). The United States Congress organized the area on February 27, 1801, as a subdivision of the District of Columbia and was named Alexandria County. Congress returned the land donated by Virginia in 1846, They did this due to issues involving Congressional representation of the area and the abolishment of slavery. The county’s name was changed the to Arlington in 1920 by the General Assembly of Virginia to avoid confusion with the City of Alexandria.
The Arlington County is situated in northern Virginia and is on the south bank of the Potomac River which is directly across from Washington, D.C. It is bordered by Fairfax County to the southwest, and the City of Alexandria to the southeast. Arlington has a land area of 26 square miles. Arlington is geographically the smallest self governing county in the United States and has no other towns in it’s borders. Given the unique characteristics of Arlington, for statistical purposes Arlington county is included as a municipality within the Washington Metro area by the United States Census Bureau. Arlington County had a population of 207,627 residents, as of the 2010 census report. If Arlington was incorporated it would be the 4th largest city in the state of Virginia.
Given it’s proximity to Washington, D.C., Arlington is headquarters to many different departments and agencies of the federal government of the U. S., some of which include the Pentagon, the Department of Defense, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). All of these federal agencies, U. S. government contractors, and service industries contribute to Arlington’s stable economy. Arlington is one of the highest income counties in the United States of America. Arlington is the location of many national memorials and museums, which include the Arlington National Cemetery (where many of our finest service men and women are buried), the Pentagon Memorial, the Marine Corps War Memorial, and the United States Air Force Memorial.
The area that is now present day Arlington County used to be part of Fairfax County in the Colony of Virginia. Land grants were given from the British monarch, which were awarded to prominent Englishmen in exchange for political favors. One of these grantees was Lord Thomas Fairfax, the sixth Lord Fairfax of Cameron. Both Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax were named after him. The name Arlington comes from the 1st Earl of Arlington, Henry Bennet whose name had been given to a plantation along the Potomac River. First Lady Martha Washington’s grandson George Washington Parke Custis, acquired this land in 1802. The land was eventually passed down to wife of General Robert E. Lee, Mary Anna Custis Lee. The property along the Potomac River later became known as Arlington National Cemetery during the American Civil War, and now lends its name to present day Arlington County.
The estate of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s family at and around Arlington House was subjected to an appraisal of $26,810, and was given a tax of $92.07. Lee’s wife, Mary Anna Custis Lee, the owner of the property, however did not pay the tax in person. The result of which was the Federal government confiscated the property and turned it into a military cemetery.
Hoover Field was established In the 1930s on the present site of the Pentagon. In that decade, Colonial Heights, Buckingham, and other apartment communities were built and opened. When World War II was going on it brought a boom to the county, but one that could not be met by new construction because of the rationing imposed by the war effort.
Five al-Qaeda hijackers deliberately crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into The Pentagon on September 11, 2001, killing 125 Pentagon workers and all of the 64 passengers on board, as part of the September 11 attacks.
