Alexandria is an independent city that is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United State. As of 2010, Alexandria had a total population of about 139,966 as of the census report. Alexandria is situated along the western bank of the Potomac River, it is approximately six miles south of the capital Washington, D.C.
Modern Alexandria, like most of northern Virginia, as well as central Maryland has been shaped by its proximity to the nation’s capital Washington D.C. Most of Alexandria’s population is that of professionals working in the federal civil service, U.S. military, or workers for one of the many private companies that provide services to the federal government. One of largest employer in Alexandria is the U.S. Department of Defense. Other companies include the Institute for Defense Analyses and the Center for Naval Analyses which both work for the government. In 2005, the United States Patent and Trademark Office moved into a new headquarters complex in the city of Alexandria, taking with it 7,100 employees from 18 separate buildings in nearby Crystal City.
The center of Alexandria is known as the historic Old Town. With its concentration of shops, restaurants, antique shops and theaters, all within walking distance is a major draw for tourists. Like it center, Old Town, many of Alexandria’s neighborhoods are compact, walkable, and are high income suburbs of Washington D.C. It is the 7th largest and the highest income independent city located in Virginia.
The first settlement in Alexandria was established in about 1695 in what was then the English Colony of Virginia. The Virginia Tobacco Inspection Law of 1730 stated that all tobacco grown in the Virginia colony must be brought to locally designated public areas for inspection before sale. One of the sites designated as a warehouse was on the upper Potomac River it was at the mouth of Hunting Creek. However with the ground being unsuitable at that location, the new warehouse was to be built a half-mile up river.
After the 1745 settlement of the colony’s 10 year dispute with England’s Lord Fairfax over the western boundary of the northern Neck Proprietary. The Council in London finding in favor of Lord Fairfax’s expanded claim. Some of the locals of Fairfax County came together and formed the Ohio Company of Virginia. Their intent was to establish a trade route into the interior of America.
The tobacco warehouse at Hunting Creek offered the best location for a trading port which could accommodate sailing ships because of it’s deep waters. After this many of the local tobacco farmers wanted a new town to be planned further up Hunting Creek, away from the tobacco fields along the river.
